Abstract:

The Austrian Ingeborg Bachmann was one of the most important writers of the German language in the early decades of the Post War Period. Her success, as well as her politically engaged and innovation literature largely contributed to the success of the literary group Die Grupe 47, composed by the Post War youth generation. The human relations, especially Fascism in everyday relations, particularly manifested in the relations between men and women, the social limits which restrict the human relations, as well the individual happiness, are frequent themes in her prose. In the radio plays Ein Geschäft mit Träumen (A Deal with Dreams), 1952, and Der gute Gott von Manhattan (The good God of Manhattan), 1957, the author discusses these crucial themes and she creates characters bound to social limits but who develop some autonomy, freedom and feelings in the fictitious cultures presented by the writer in these works. In this research, both radio plays were discussed from a historical perspective, the actions and characters are connected to worldwide historical events in the 1950s, during the Cold War, woman's situation in the American society at that time is focused in the text. In addition to the reference to the Cold War, the three dreams of the main character of A Deal with Dreams through the perspective of Carl Jung's studies on dreaming. Love and time are fundamental themes in the analysis of both radio plays. The relation between both texts is discussed in the analysis of the radio play The good God of Manhattan, present based on Regina N. Lins's studies (2013) on the subject: the situation of women in the American culture, whose costums and habits are the counterpoint of the main female character of such radio play. Music is also presented as an outstanding element related to the main characters in both plays. Music, love and time are elements that give power for the characters to develop autonomy, to make them free and expand their own horizons. Communication and mediatic are powerful elements to control time and love. Characters are involved with communication and mediatic and this is discussed taking into account Michel Foucault's studies on power relations and truth.
