Abstract:

The present thesis aims to give an interpretation of the imagery that shape the city of Salvador in literature and contemporary cinema, in selected works. Assumes that the city, as the combination of the architectural and human elements that effectively compose it, allows (and perhaps even instigates) investigations that represent this city-text. Thinking about the configuration that is fundamental to every scientific procedure, this research tries to answer: How does the articulation work among the physical space of the city and the various human groups that circulate through it in contemporary times? And, specifically, how do literature and cinema express the urban imagery of Salvador? Why does this great interest in studying the city arise, if we are currently experiencing the crisis of the city? By this approach, the reflection developed here focuses on visions about Salvador undertaken by literature and cinema, using these narratives to expand the way of looking at the city. To achieve this result, this work chooses the Cultural Studies‟ point of view, which invest in the different contexts of the city as a text, as well as in a multidisciplinary perspective, based on urban studies. Composing the set that delimits the scope of this investigation, some narratives were chosen, dated from the 21st century: in literature, O canto da sereia, by Nelson Mota (2002), A rainha do Cine Roma, by Alejandro Reyes (2010), Salvador negro rancor, by Fábio Mandingo (2011) and Ladeiras, vielas e farrapos, by Tom Correia (2015a); in cinema, Cidade Baixa, by Sérgio Machado (2005), Ó paí, ó, by Monique Gardenberg (2007), Estranhos, by Paulo Alcântara (2009) and Trampolim do Forte, by João Mattos (2010). What is common among these works, making them suitable for this analysis, is that they locate the narrative in the contemporary urban space of the city of Salvador, focusing, under different perspectives, the current urban problems, and bringing the city on stage. The research allowed to identify, in the works of the selection, in both cinema and literature, the existence of a number of meanings on Salvador‟s imagery, portraying the city sometimes as a postcard for pleasure and enchantment, sometimes as an uneven city in which solidarity and human affections are daily suffocated by cruelty, misery and barriers to the wide coexistence among the various segments of society.
